Re-election for Hebron Planning & Zoning Commission

1 October 2011

To the Editor, Rivereast

My name is Lew Hinman and I am running for re-election to the Hebron Planning & Zoning Commission. I have proudly served on this Commission since 2003, the last two years as Chairman. The PZC has worked cooperatively with the other Boards and Commissions on many important projects – Burnt Hill Park, for example. Other key activities have included: revisions to certain regulations to bring them more in line with today’s business environment; sponsoring several STEAP grant applications that resulted in funding for needed projects (sidewalk expansion, façade improvements and a housing study, among others); and actively supporting the recent “Charrette” process with UCONN aimed at starting a dialogue on the long term vision for the Main Street area. Importantly, the Commission has always sought to balance the desires of the land owners, developers and businesses with our planning guidelines and regulations, and the views of the public. I look forward to building on the momentum that has been started over the last few years.

The next few years will be equally important as we begin the update to Hebron’s Plan of Conservation and Development, which outlines the guiding principles for the Town over the next decade. I would welcome the opportunity to continue serving Hebron as a PZC member, and respectfully request your support on Election Day.

Finally, I strongly encourage everyone to vote. Off-year elections traditionally have a very light voter turn-out. Voting is, in my view, more than a right in a democracy - it is a responsibility. I urge you to spend the few minutes it takes and cast your ballot in November. Thank you.

Focused on Hebron’s Future

To Hebron Residents:

For the first time in over a decade, this year’s municipal elections will be quiet. You’ll not see hoards of signs in front of the Hebron Elementary School polling location, and we hope you will see a new spirit of cooperation among all candidates running for public office to represent you in the next four years.

There is only one competitive race, in which Republican Kevin McDonnell will challenge Democrats Cathleen Murphy and Cynthia Grinnell for the two open seats on the Zoning Board of Appeals. Outside of that one race, based on the state’s mandated law of “Rules of Minority Representation,” each town committee has endorsed the allowed number of candidates for all other boards and commissions.

As chairmen of our respective town committees, we wanted to let Hebron residents know that all candidates and both town committees are focused on working cooperatively together for the betterment of Hebron’s future. There is no question that Hebron faces difficult financial times for a few years. All of our respective candidates are experienced, knowledgeable, and willing to sacrifice their personal time away from their family, their friends, and their employment in order to serve the people of our rural community and Hebron’s needs.

Our focus going forward will be to promote a spirit of cooperation that benefits all residents. We both understand that Hebron’s unemployment rate is almost equal to that of the statewide unemployment level. That is an important factor for our future officials to keep in mind when making decisions that impact all town residents.

We encourage you to get to know your candidates personally and share your thoughts and ideas so they will have your input when they make decisions.

Please join us in reuniting Hebron by making your voice heard on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8.

Sincerely,

Donna J. McCalla

Chairman, Hebron Republican Town Committee
